Demystifying accessibility

Regular Session

The software industry has been struggling with accessibility for a long time. We have collectively failed as an industry to create inclusive systems, frameworks and components that address the needs of everybody, creating artificial barriers that prevent people of all abilities to be successful with the tools we create. As a result, accessibility is consistently treated as an afterthought if not ignored it altogether: when confronted with accessibility issues, most of us end up throwing hands in the air as they feel overwhelmed with concepts that seem hard to grasp and better left to the specialized few who may be able to navigate uncharted and treacherous waters. There is a better way: accessibility doesn't need to be a staggering mountain to climb and overwhelming endeavor. When approached with the right mindset, a few solid foundations, and a handful of supporting tools, accessibility not only becomes manageable: it can be a powerful tool to build software that is more robust, better designed, testable and future proof not to mention more inclusive and empowering for all of us. The time has come for the software community to raise the bar on accessibility and inclusion. We can build better software together once we begin demystifying accessibility and address it as one of the many engineering issues we have encountered in the past and successfully put behind us. We can do this.
